Online Marketing Key Terms

Affiliate Marketing:
Arrangements for consideration under which you promote a third party's business or Web site.

Algorithm:
Software programs designed by search engines to determine relevancy and ranking of Web pages.

Clickthrough (CT):
The act of clicking on a sponsored link or banner ad.

Clickthrough Rate (CTR):
The ratio of the number of clickthroughs to the number of impressions.

Conversion Rate:
A measure of expected action taken by a visitor from a Web site, such as viewing an ad, making a purchase, registering or signing up for a service or information.

Cookie:
A piece of software that a Web server can store on a users' PC to identify future visits.

Cost Per Click (CPC):
The price charged by search engines when a user clicks through an ad.

Crawler (or Spider):
A software robot sent by search engines to "crawl" through pages of a Web site to collect and index data.

Frames:
Sections into which Web pages are divided.

Hits:
A request for a file from a Web server.

Impression:
The display of an ad.

Keyword Phrase (or Search String):
The words or phrases typed into a search box to obtain results from a directory or search engine.

Link Popularity:
The number of Web sites linking to your Web site.
Page Rank: A position given to individual Web site pages by Google.

Paid Inclusion:
A service offered by certain search engines to facilitate the indexing of Web pages in the natural results of the serach engines.

Pay Per Click:
An online marketing model where advertisers pay for each click on their sponsored links.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
The process of configuring a Web site to consistently rank higher in the natural results of the search engines.

Spider:
See Crawler.

Search String:
See Keyword Phrase.

Static Pages:
Web pages made up of content that remains constant and is not updated on the basis of a user's profile or requests.

Submission:
Submitting or suggesting a URL to a search engine for the purpose of having the site indexed.

Title Tag:
An HTML tag used to define the text at the top of the browser.

User Sessions:
Unique visitors who have visited a Web site a least once in a specific time frame.
